Last weekend, Kim and I snowshoed the course on Saturday, and by Monday we were removing tarps and taking off the enkamat then re-tarping again. Everything was looking quite healthy which was surprising with the fluctuating weather conditions throughout the winter. The temperature sensors we used showed three different times getting to –35° C and in between going to +8-10° air temperature, although at the green surface under tarps/snow the coldest it got was –3° and the warmest temperature was 0°.
So far from people’s reports around the province, conditions look promising, if Mother Nature cooperates from now on, but it definitely will be a later than normal start to the golf season.
It was great to see a good showing of STA members at the CGSA Conference February 24-28 in Calgary where Tyler McComas, superintendent at The Willows became President of the Canadian Golf Superintendents Association. Tyler is the fourth CGSA president from the STA and he will represent us well. The other three are Terry McNeilly Saskatoon Golf & Country Club, Kyle Kellgren Jackfish, and Pierre Vezeau from Cooke Municipal.
The STA board is currently planning an Education Field Day in early June, and the Don Campbell Research Tournament in August—more details to follow. The Fall Wind Up will be held in early November in Saskatoon at the Saskatoon Golf & Country Club.
This September, the CGSA Fall Field Day will be returning to the province, hosted by Riverside Country Club on Sept 22. This is a great event and try to attend if you can. There will be more info sent out in the coming months, so stay tuned.
I hope everyone has had a great winter and start up goes well for everyone. Looking forward to seeing you all soon.
