Well, here we go. After the 4th warmest winter in Saskatchewan history we are off to an early start to the 2016 season. By almost all early reports, it was a great winter for turfgrass survival and I hope everyone has a very successful season.
As everyone knows, on February 14, 2016 we lost our Executive Director, Don Campbell, after a nearly 30 year battle to heart disease. My Dad began working at Riverside as a caddy and shagging balls for Head Professional Bill Turnbull in the late 1940's and then joined the green staff where he worked summers while trying to pursue a professional hockey career. He left Riverside for 3 years before returning to be Superintendent in 1969 and also managing the club in 1970. He worked both positions until 1985 and was Executive Director until his retirement in 1996.
It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of Don Campbell on February 14th, 2016.
S.T.A. Executive Director, 'Turf Tips' writer and editor of our 'TURFTALK' newsletter, Don Campbell was an asset to our industry for decades!
A member in the turfgrass community for more than 60 years, Don started his career at Riverside Country Club in Saskatoon as a caddy, eventually becoming the course Superintendent. He finished his career as the General Manager at the very same course.
In 2004, Don was awarded the CGSA John B. Steel Distinguished Service Award, recognizing his lifetime commitment to turf care.
Don is survived by his wife Marie and three children: Sherril, Glen and Doug.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Martin's United Church with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please support CARG or The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan.
Arrangements entrusted to Kari Peters, Park Funeral Chapel 306.244.2103.
