After thinking this was one of the smoothest winter close-ups we have ever had, above 0 temperatures with melting snow and an overnight rain turning into 50-80 kph winds with snow leaves me a bit apprehensive.  Fortunately after checking greens and other surfaces, there appears to be no water or ice anywhere.

Everyone seemed to enjoy last week’s STA Fall Wind Up. Many thanks go out to our speakers for the interesting and informative talks.  Jason Pick, Olds College and Alberta Turfgrass Research Centre gave 3 great talks all worth CEU credits toward recertification of your pesticide license, and Scott White of Syngenta gave a talk on the second day, also for CEU points.  The Saskatoon Golf & Country Club was a great host and thanks also to MacLaren Taylor and the staff for a job well done.

Kyle Kellgren of Jackfish remains as President of the Association, with Richard Berg from Elmwood stepping down as a board member after many years of service.  Thanks Richard, you will be missed at our meetings.  Replacing Richard is Lance Wakefield of the Royal Regina.  We welcome you to the board.

Congratulations to Kevin Bloski, our J. Drew Smith Member of the Year award winner. Kevin is a much deserving recipient of this award for all he has done for our association. It was the first time I’ve ever seen him with a lost for words as he accepted the award.

With the slightly earlier than average start to the season,
and virtually no off days weather-wise until close up, rounds of golf have gone through the roof! With nearly 194,000 rounds of golf played this season over last year in the province, golf has really taken off with no signs of slowing down.

After a busy season, I hope everyone is taking it easier and relaxing some what. Enjoy the off season, hopefully we get a normal winter with no fluctuating temperatures and decent snow cover.
